Construction and Trades

We offer four trade training courses to construct a low-cost home. Students graduate with a trade certificate.

Construction and Trades

Launched in May 2022, the Construction and Trades Program offers young men and women ages 18 to 25 the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and in-demand skills for a future in the trades. Each student receives practical training in one of four essential trades—electrical, drywall and steel framing, melamine and carpentry, and plumbing—each taught by a professional instructor. At the end of the program, graduates receive a trade certificate, equipping them to contribute to their communities and support themselves economically.

Electrical From basic wiring and switch installation to real-world projects like rewiring buildings and setting up lighting systems, students in the electrical course receive hands-on training from day one. Their skills are tested in live practicum settings, such as installing an intercom system and floodlights at The Life Resource Center or upgrading the electrical systems in a local church. These projects help students transition confidently into Manchay’s local workforce.
Drywall and Steel Framing Students in this course learn how to frame and finish walls using steel and drywall—essential skills for residential construction. Graduates are already contributing to C4L’s affordable housing initiative by helping build a model home in Manchay. From assembling trusses to creating full walls, students learn step-by-step how to transform construction plans into real, livable spaces.
Melamine and Carpentry In the carpentry course, students begin with foundational skills such as sawing, gluing, and leveling, and then progress to crafting custom furniture. They start with small shelf units and quickly move on to building large drawer cabinets and wall units. These beautifully constructed pieces aren’t just for training—they’re ready for sale, helping students gain experience and earn income from their craft.
Plumbing Led by a professional tradesperson, the plumbing course trains students in essential waterline and piping installations. From classroom instruction to on-site plumbing work in local buildings, students can apply their knowledge in real-world settings. With these skills, graduates can pursue steady employment and improve access to clean water systems in their communities.
