A six-month course teaching participants about seeding, nurturing, and harvesting up to 23 vegetable crops in the arid and challenging conditions in Manchay.
In the arid hills of Manchay, our Gardening Training Center is transforming lives and landscapes through hands-on agricultural education. This six-month program equips students with the knowledge and skills to grow over 20 varieties of vegetables—including lettuce, carrots, beets, basil, chard, and more—despite the region’s dry climate. Participants learn essential techniques such as seeding, soil preparation, organic fertilization, and sustainable pest control, all under the guidance of Eduardo, a seasoned local agricultural engineer. With access to 40 drip-irrigated garden plots and a sheltered classroom, students cultivate thriving crops and deepen their understanding of climate-appropriate irrigation systems.
Throughout the course, students harvest up to four rounds of produce while learning to nourish their families and futures. Field trips to Eduardo’s greenhouse farm offer further insight into innovative farming practices for desert environments. From organic pest control using plastic cups and sticky traps to creating fertilizing powders from natural matter, participants gain sustainable methods they can apply at home or in future business ventures. More than just a training program, the Gardening Training Center is a seedbed for self-reliance, healthy living, and community resilience.
